The License and Revenue Division assists businesses in the City of Montgomery when issuing and maintaining appropriate business licenses and sales tax numbers. Business applications and tax forms to properly register your business and pay your dues are listed below. 

Business License Renewal Form

Business License Application – No Physical Location 

Complete this form to receive legal authorization to operate your business without having a physical location. This includes both non-local businesses and residential based businesses.

Business License Application for a Commercial Address

Complete this form to receive legal authorization to operate your business within Montgomery. Additionally, the business owner needs to possess a Certificate of Occupancy for the designated location.

Consumer Use Tax Registration

Complete this form to claim Consumer Use Tax in instances where the consumer made a purchase and was not charged the proper sales tax.

Penalty Waiver Form

Complete this form to request a waiver of penalties for delinquent tax filings and/or business licenses.

The following cut-off times have been established in order for our staff to provide you with the attention and time necessary to process license and tax-related transactions.

Transactions received after the established cut-off times or those that exceed the maximum forms allowable, may be deposited in the Drop Box at 25 Washington Avenue. The Security Officer will provide an envelope for your transactions if you arrive prior to 5:00 p.m. Please indicate the drop-off date and time on the envelope and the License and Revenue Division will make every effort to ensure that your transaction(s) are handled expeditiously.

Important Notifications:

  •  Please note that daily cut-off times for each service will be strictly enforced unless the taxpayer has a scheduled appointment with a License & Revenue Staff Member.
  • Color-Coded Badges will be issued for taxpayer visits, appointments and visitors.
  • License & Revenue Office Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

City of Montgomery Abbreviated Business Licensing Process

In order to expedite the licensing process, several actions are required prior to the issuance of the license. Initially, Zoning approval and the Inspections Department Certificate of Occupancy must be obtained for businesses with physical locations within the corporate limits of the City of Montgomery.

For licensing purposes, the following items are required if applicable:

  • Completed License Application (if applicable, retail license applicants must provide a completed sales tax application)  
  • Certificate of Occupancy or Exemption Statement
  • State Board Certification(s)
  • State ABC License
  • Articles of Incorporation
  • Background Investigation
  • City of Montgomery Sales Tax Application (for retail applicable)
  • Picture Identification, which includes, but is not limited to:
  1. State-Issued Driver’s License
  2. State-Issued Non-Driver Photo I.D.
  3. U.S. Passport
  4. U.S. Passport Card
  5. U.S. Military I.D.
  6. U.S. Permanent Residence Card (Green Card)
